Matto Espresso: Redefining Coffee Culture Through Affordability and Innovation

Matto Espresso has defied expectations in a city known for its premium coffee culture by delivering high-quality coffee at an unbeatable price—just $3. With a business model rooted in efficiency, innovation, and a strong commitment to customer satisfaction, Matto has expanded rapidly across New York City and is set to reach 200 locations by 2029.

The American Executive had the opportunity to meet with Jennifer Maman, the Founder of Matto Espresso, to discuss the company’s origins, unique approach to making premium coffee accessible, and ambitious growth strategy.

Leadership: From Wall Street to Coffee Entrepreneurship

Matto Espresso’s journey is an unconventional one. Transitioning from a career at Morgan Stanley to entrepreneurship, the company’s leadership leveraged expertise in equity marketing to shape Matto’s operational strategy. The ability to simplify complex ideas and communicate them effectively has been a key asset in franchise development and team leadership.

"My background in equity marketing has significantly influenced Matto Espresso’s growth strategy and operational efficiencies by equipping me with the ability to simplify complex ideas and communicate them effectively—skills that are essential in both leadership and franchise development," Jennifer explained. "Just as I simplified financial concepts for clients, I now break down the complexities of running a successful coffee shop into practical, step-by-step guidance for employees and franchisees."

This commitment to structured growth has played a crucial role in ensuring operational consistency across Matto’s locations while maintaining a seamless customer experience.

The $3 Coffee Revolution: Quality Without Compromise

Matto Espresso’s bold move to offer high-quality coffee at a fixed $3 price point was inspired by Italian coffee culture, where premium espresso is both affordable and accessible. "The idea of Matto was conceived during a trip to Italy, where high-quality espresso is accessible at affordable prices," Jennifer shared. "Inspired by this model, we sought to bring the same concept to the United States, offering premium coffee with the simplicity of a fixed price. Our mission to democratize the coffee industry has positioned Matto as the coffee company that makes high-quality coffee accessible to everyone."

Maintaining high quality at a low price requires meticulous planning. Matto sources its coffee beans from one of Italy’s finest roasters, ensuring a consistently rich and smooth taste. "We have taken a meticulous approach toward our operations. We source our beans from one of Italy’s finest roasters, ensuring exceptional flavor, consistency, and sustainability," Jennifer explained.

Beyond sourcing quality ingredients, Matto relies on standardized recipes, comprehensive training programs, and quality control systems to maintain its high standards. The company’s central kitchen ensures that every pastry and food item meets its strict criteria for freshness and quality. "Our central kitchen allows us to maintain strict quality control over every item we produce, from sourcing premium ingredients to crafting our pastries and food items with care," Jennifer noted.

Scalability and the Future of Matto Espresso

Matto’s rapid expansion across New York—with 30 locations and a goal of 200 by 2029—is driven by a flexible business model that adapts to different environments. "We can operate in small and diverse formats, including trucks, kiosks, and small-footprint stores," Jennifer explained. "The use of trucks and kiosks enables Matto to establish a presence in locations with space constraints or where traditional storefronts may not be feasible, such as inside hospitals, university campuses, or transport hubs."

This adaptability reduces startup and operational costs while allowing Matto to efficiently enter and serve new markets, particularly in densely populated urban areas. By maintaining a lean operational structure, the company continues to offer premium coffee at an affordable price while sustaining profitability. "By maintaining a flexible and adaptable business model, Matto can efficiently scale its operations, enter new markets, and meet the evolving needs of its customers—all while maintaining the quality and affordability that define our brand."

Technology: The Driving Force Behind Matto’s Success

Innovation plays a key role in Matto Espresso’s operational efficiency. Its proprietary mobile app has revolutionized the customer experience, streamlined ordering and improved service speed. "Our proprietary mobile app provides a seamless experience for customers while enhancing convenience and satisfaction," Jennifer stated. "It has helped to streamline the ordering process by enabling quick, efficient, and friendly service—especially during peak volume periods."

The app is also a vital tool for customer engagement, accounting for 43% of Matto’s business. "By offering a seamless and frictionless purchasing process, the app not only enhances convenience for our customers but also reduces labor demands, enabling us to manage peak volume periods with greater efficiency," Jennifer explained. She also added that Matto has a 77% retention rate on their app.

Additionally, Matto leverages advanced inventory management software to minimize waste and control costs. "Together, our technology-first approach and efficient store design create a scalable, profitable business model that supports both operational success and long-term growth."

Franchising: Expanding the Matto Brand

Franchising has played a pivotal role in Matto Espresso’s growth, with 26 out of its 30 locations franchised. The decision to expand through franchising was driven by high customer demand. "The decision to franchise was inspired by the overwhelming demand from our customers, many of whom loved our concept and expressed a strong interest in becoming franchisees themselves," Jennifer revealed.

To ensure brand consistency across all locations, Matto has developed robust training programs, manuals, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for franchisees. "Our franchise quality control team conducts regular follow-up visits and audits to provide ongoing support, address any challenges, and ensure adherence to our high standards," Jennifer added.

Future Expansion: Beyond New York

Looking ahead, Matto Espresso is setting its sights on expansion beyond urban hubs, with a focus on suburban markets that value high-quality, affordable coffee. "Looking ahead, Matto’s expansion priorities include strategically entering markets beyond New York, including suburban areas that value high-quality, affordable coffee but may have fewer premium options," Jennifer stated.

With a technology-driven approach, Matto aims to maintain efficiency and quality as it grows. "As a technology-driven company, our proprietary app plays a central role in this expansion. The app allows us to build one-on-one relationships with our customers, offering tailored experiences based on their preferences and habits.

By leveraging its adaptable business model, cutting-edge technology, and commitment to quality, Matto Espresso is well-positioned to reshape the coffee industry, making premium coffee accessible to all while maintaining the highest standards of excellence. As the company looks toward the future, one thing remains clear: Matto is not just about coffee—it’s about redefining the coffee experience.
