Tampa Convention Center : An Engine For Civic Re-invention
In a city gaining momentum as one of America’s most desirable destinations, the Tampa Convention Center (TCC) is more than just a venue—it’s an economic catalyst, a cultural beacon, and a symbol of civic innovation. Under the leadership of David Ingram, Executive Director, and Juan Lopez, Sales & Marketing Manager, TCC has elevated its role from traditional convention space to a dynamic contributor to Tampa’s growth and identity.
The American Executive had the opportunity to chat with David and Juan about the convention center’s recent $44 million expansion, its commitment to sustainability, the balance between civic service and global competitiveness, and what the future holds for Tampa’s waterfront jewel.
Building on a Legacy, Leading with Vision
David’s path to TCC began in hospitality with the Walt Disney Company and evolved through leadership roles at Orange County Convention Center, one of the nation’s largest venues. Returning to his hometown in 2022, he brought a combination of deep industry experience and personal connection to the city.
"I grew up here. I went to high school and college in Tampa. My parents and sister are still here," David shared. "That personal connection, combined with what I learned in Orlando about being an economic driver, allows me to help move the center forward."
Juan, originally from nearby St. Petersburg, also came up through live event management, transitioning from sports arenas to conventions over 14 years at TCC. "There’s an association for everything," he joked. "My background in event management really helps me understand what clients need and how to best support their vision."
A City-Owned Venue with a Civic Mandate
For David, leading TCC isn’t just about hosting events; it’s about aligning with public interest and serving as a civic engine. "We’re a governmental agency, so partnerships are key—especially with Visit Tampa Bay, local hotels, service providers, and of course, city leadership," he explained.
That collaboration recently earned TCC LEED Silver Certification for operations and maintenance, an achievement years in the making. "It started around 2020–21, got interrupted, and we essentially restarted in 2022," David said. "From energy conservation to food waste reduction and community donations, sustainability is part of everything we do."
A Tangible Impact on Tampa’s Economy
TCC contributes over $100 million annually to the local economy, a figure that becomes evident at ground level. "You see the hotels filled, the restaurants buzzing, rideshares peaking, and even the streetcar packed," David said. "Events like the IBEX Boatbuilders Expo create visible ripples across our downtown."
But the center's role isn’t just economic—it’s cultural. "There’s a vitality that comes with conventions that energizes our city. It brings locals and visitors together in a way that adds vibrancy to our community," he added.
Smart Expansion for a Smarter Experience
TCC’s $44 million capital expansion, completed in 2023, added 18,000 square feet of new space—including 18 state-of-the-art waterfront meeting rooms.
"Each floor has 9,000 square feet of flex space," Juan said. "Groups like IBEX can now expand their show floors or add breakout sessions. It’s given planners the flexibility they need and elevated the attendee experience."
Beyond space, infrastructure upgrades included advanced AV systems, window shading controls, and major elevator and escalator modernizations. "Some elevators transitioned from oil-based to cooled systems for greater efficiency and environmental performance," Juan explained.
Technology as a Competitive Edge
Tech has become central to TCC’s operations—not just for convenience but for staying globally competitive. "We host major international events—like the 2012 Republican National Convention and the 2021 Super Bowl," Juan noted. "Those events raised the bar."
TCC’s internet and telecom systems are now managed by Smart City, which recently made a seven-figure investment in the center’s infrastructure. The addition of XpoDigital for digital signage has created both a modernized attendee experience and new advertising revenue opportunities.
"Our digital signage isn’t just pretty," Juan said. "It’s functional, dynamic, and enhances the storytelling of each event."
Marketing a Municipal Venue with Global Appeal
Telling the story of a city-run convention center might sound like a challenge—but for Juan and the TCC team, it’s a story filled with excitement, uniqueness, and unmatched value.
"Our number one asset is our location," he said. "We’re right on the water, in the heart of Tampa’s Riverwalk. Two and a half miles of museums, parks, restaurants, and hotels. You can walk everywhere."
He adds that Tampa International Airport consistently ranks among the nation’s best, making access seamless. "Combine that with our culture—like Ybor City’s cigar factory heritage—and you’ve got an unforgettable destination," Juan said.
Collaboration as a Core Principle
TCC’s success relies on close coordination with public and private stakeholders alike. "Whether it’s hotels, Visit Tampa Bay, or our city council, we all have to work together to create a consistent, high-quality experience," David said.
He also praised his internal partners, from food services to digital media providers. "The center’s impact isn’t possible without everyone being aligned—our service providers are key extensions of our brand."
A Patient People-First Approach
Running a venue that serves both public interest and global events requires a delicate balance. For David, it comes down to flexibility and patience. "We have to pivot—though I hate that word," he laughed. "Every day is different. It could be cheerleading one day, defense contractors the next, then a local charity gala."
Patience, he said, is essential when advocating for long-term investments. "Not everything changes overnight. But when you think about return on investment in terms of public good—like hotel occupancy taxes reducing the burden on local taxpayers—it all starts to make sense."
David is quick to remind people that convention centers are more than infrastructure. "A building is four walls. What makes a destination is what’s outside those walls. We’re a platform to showcase Tampa."
Looking ahead, TCC aims to maintain its momentum by growing alongside the city, not just reacting to it. "As Tampa evolves, we evolve with it," David said. "We want to be part of the city’s transformation—not just by hosting events, but by helping attract investment, business relocations, and cultural moments."
Culture, Community, and the Joy of the Unexpected
Asked what he enjoys most about his job, David answered without hesitation: "Every day is different. That unpredictability—paired with the opportunity to help shape a growing city—is what drives me."
For Juan, it’s about community moments. "Gasparilla is one of my favorite events. When the pirates land at the convention center, there’s this moment when you realize you’re part of something uniquely Tampa. It makes me proud to represent this destination."
Whether it’s upgrading infrastructure, welcoming global leaders, or hosting parades of pirates, the Tampa Convention Center continues to prove that a civic institution can be innovative, inclusive, and indispensable.
"It’s not about us," David said. "It’s about the destination—and we’re proud to help tell Tampa’s story to the world."
